Buying an American caravan from the States can be a risky business - paying thousands of dollars to someone you've never met, for a caravan you've probably never seen, apart from a few pictures taken with a camera-phone. It may not even exist!
For buyers who are new to Airstreams, telling a good one from a bad one can be difficult.
Problems with floors and chassis are possible, as these caravans are approaching - or beyond -
fifty
years old! Many of the systems probably won't be working either - the cost of
rebuilding an internet bargain often runs
into tens of thousands of pounds.
Fixing up transport to the docks in the USA - and transatlantic shipping - can also be expensive
and problematic. The actual cost of shipping an Airstream runs into several thousand pounds
alone, with insurance and customs duty.
Also, it must be pointed out that Airstream caravans are not 'Plug and Play' devices when they
land in the UK, requiring modification of gas, electrics, lighting, and brakes to comply with
current UK and EU regs.
